A If you're using hormonal birth control — like the pill, patch, or ring — it can be tricky to know if you're entering perimenopause. That's because these methods often regulate your periods and mask the usual cycle changes that signal this transition. They may also reduce some of the common symptoms of perimenopause. Watch for subtle symptoms including: Hot flashes and night sweats: You may notice sudden feelings of heat or wake up drenched in sweat. Sleep changes: Some people have trouble falling or staying asleep, or feel unusually tired. Mood changes: You might have new or worsening mood changes, anxiety, or irritability. Vaginal dryness or discomfort: Dryness, discomfort during sex, or a drop in libido are common as estrogen levels decrease. Age and timing: If you're in your mid-40s or older and experiencing these symptoms, perimenopause is more likely. Your doctor may recommend stopping your birth control for a short time (usually about a month) to check your hormone levels to rule out other possible causes for your symptoms.
