Self-esteem can affect so many areas of your life, from the quality of your relationships, to how you show up at work, to your mental health.
Higher self-esteem is often associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression. Low self-esteem can lead to people-pleasing tendencies, avoidance of new opportunities, difficulty setting boundaries, and a need for external validation. But you can change that! Building up a healthier relationship with yourself through small, consistent habits can help, and no major overhauls are needed.
Below are a few simple everyday practices you can pick up to help boost your self-esteem and overall well-being.
👀 Notice and reframe negative self-talk: How you speak to yourself matters. Instead of trying to silence your inner critic, start by acknowledging it. Whenever a harsh voice pops up, pause and label it: “I’m having a negative thought.” Becoming aware can help you step back and question whether it’s actually true. Over time, you can replace those thoughts with more self-compassion.
💪 Build a “strengths awareness” mindset: It’s easy to focus on potential weaknesses. Your strengths deserve more attention! Start regularly reflecting on them, and give yourself some credit. Are you a good listener? Do you show resilience during hard times? Try jotting down one thing you did well each day to train your brain to see a fuller, more accurate picture of who you are (with your wins front and center).
💚 Surround yourself with supportive influences: Your environment and the people around you can affect your self-esteem more than you think. Do your best to lean into relationships that feel uplifting, encouraging, and respectful. Consistent support can make a world of difference in how you feel about yourself.
🧠 Take care of yourself: Your mind and body are closely connected. Feeling good mentally and physically might just translate into a better sense of self.
