| Q: |
Does CBD really help with anxiety, stress, and depression? |
|
| A: |
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a popular natural remedy for pain relief, sleep, and other health concerns. You’ve probably seen it in oil tinctures, gummies, topicals, and other supplement forms. It’s available in various strengths and in different types, including broad spectrum, full spectrum, and isolate.
One of the potential perks is that it can promote relaxation without creating the mind-altering effects of its fellow cannabinoid THC. More research is needed to confirm these benefits, but what do we know so far about how it may support your mental well-being?
- A 2020 literature review on CBD and mood disorders found that multiple studies suggest CBD has properties that may help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and even psychosis.
- A small 2019 study also found that CBD was effective in reducing PTSD-related symptoms, including nightmares, in adults.
- Another small 2018 study found that CBD can help reduce anxiety during public speaking.
There isn’t sufficient evidence for doctors to recommend CBD as a first-line treatment for mental health conditions like anxiety and depression (yet). However, it’s generally considered a lower-risk natural remedy that may work well when combined with other coping skills and treatment options.
Before trying a CBD product, it’s important to talk with a doctor about the potential side effects and make sure that it won’t interact with any medications you’re taking. Once you get the green light, check out our list of the top CBD oils of 2026, tested and vetted by our team. |
