| Q: |
What are some lesser-known anxiety triggers? |
|
| A: |
Identifying triggers is an important part of managing your anxiety. Conflict with a friend, public speaking, social events, and financial stress are among the more common ones that many people might share. But there are other sneakier causes that may be a regular part of your daily routine.
While we’re all different, here are a few things that could be causing your anxiety without your realizing it.
🥗 Skipping meals: When you don’t eat, your blood sugar may drop. This can lead to shaky hands, agitation, and feelings of nervousness. If you can’t make time for three meals a day, aim to eat healthy snacks to prevent low blood sugar and anxiety symptoms.
☕ Caffeine: Yes, your beloved morning cup of coffee! This can depend on the type of caffeine and how much you’re drinking, but research has shown that it can increase anxiety or induce panic attacks in people with panic disorder. If you suspect your drink of choice may be triggering your anxiety, try to cut back by opting for decaf or non-caffeinated options whenever possible.
💤 Not getting enough sleep: A rough night’s sleep can negatively affect your mental health. This can be a vicious cycle, as anxiety can disrupt sleep, and inadequate sleep can increase anxiety. Treating and preventing stress could improve your rest and avoid the other effects of sleep deprivation.
💊 Birth control medication: This is one of many medications that could cause anxiety. Meds for weight loss, cough, congestion, and other conditions can affect how you feel, too. It’s important to talk with a doctor to find alternative options that may better support your mental and physical well-being.
Recognizing what triggers your anxiety symptoms can be challenging and take time. Try journaling to figure out any patterns. Seek support if you’re having a hard time, or work with a therapist for more professional help. Above all, be patient with yourself and willing to explore your past to understand how it may affect you today. |
