| | | | | Growing up, my mom always trimmed our hair on the new moon because she believed that would help it grow faster. This belief probably stemmed from the old farming practice that suggests planting by moon phase. Sadly, there's no robust evidence to support either of these traditions. But what about the other common claim that trimming your hair, in general, will help it grow faster? We looked into it. | | | | | | | Snip, snip, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik January 5, 2026 • 3 min read | | | | | | | |
| | | | | | No, trimming your hair doesn't make it grow faster | | Despite this common claim, the reality is that trimming the ends of your hair doesn't have any effect on the hair follicle (aka the root), which is where all growth happens. However, there is a seed of truth to this myth. | | When you snip off damaged ends, your strands are less likely to break (split ends can travel upwards, causing breakage higher up in your hair). Depending on how bad your split ends are, trimming them off may actually help your hair grow longer since the strands won't be breaking off all of the time. (That said, trimming hair definitely helps your hair look healthier and fuller!) | | Genetics play the biggest role in determining how fast your hair grows, how long it can get, and what its natural thickness and texture will be. Each strand grows from a follicle that cycles through growth, rest, and shedding phases. On average, hair grows about half an inch per month, although this varies from person to person. | | Your daily habits can nudge things in the right direction, but it's important to temper your expectations. Some things that may help include: | - making sure you're getting enough nutrients, especially biotin, folate, zinc, and B12
- managing stress (which includes getting lots of good quality sleep)
- avoiding regularly exposing your hair to heat
- keeping your scalp healthy
- reducing breakage by gently brushing, using conditioner, and avoiding tight hairstyles
| | If you feel like your hair has suddenly started thinning or stopped growing as fast as usual, there could be a few reasons. High stress, hormonal shifts, nutrient deficiencies, certain medications, or underlying conditions like thyroid issues can slow things down. Age also naturally shortens the growth phase over time. | | | | | | | | | | | Growth mindset | | | | | | | | | Best Hair Growth Products for 2026 | | We looked for products and treatments from reputable brands with the most significant research behind them and the most effective ingredients.
