These foods can support healthy aging
Your diet can directly affect how you feel, especially as you get older. Generally speaking, you'll want to eat healthy sources of protein, healthy fats, and foods rich in antioxidants.
While you don't need to eat all of the following foods to age well, you might consider adding more of these ingredients to your meals to support healthy aging:
  • Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO): EVOO is a healthier oil that can help fight disease and reduce inflammation, oxidative damage, and signs of skin aging. Try adding it to salads or dips or using it while cooking.
  • Green tea: High in antioxidants and polyphenols, studies suggest that green tea may reduce your risk of heart disease, neurological decline, premature aging, and other chronic diseases.
  • Fatty fish: Fatty fish like salmon are high in selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein, which are all associated with supporting skin health.
  • Dark chocolate or cocoa: Dark chocolate contains flavonols, which are linked to health benefits like lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cognitive decline. The higher the cocoa content, the higher the flavonol content!
  • Vegetables: Carrots, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes are high in carotenoids and antioxidants. Leafy greens, bell peppers, and broccoli are rich in vitamin C, which is crucial for collagen production.
  • Flaxseed: Flaxseed is high in an omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid and contains lignans, a type of polyphenol that can help fight free radicals in the body.
  • Pomegranates: Pomegranates are rich in fiber, potassium, and vitamin K, all of which help to support a healthy heart.
  • Avocados: Avocados contain several vitamins, minerals, and monounsaturated fats essential for heart and skin health.
  • Tomatoes: Lycopene is a type of carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red color and impressive health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, preventing certain cancers, and protecting against sunburn.
Try this today: Aim to add at least one protein, one healthy fat, and one to two vegetables to each meal — ideally with any of the ingredients listed above!
