| | | | | Q | | Can GLP-1 meds help with menopausal weight gain? | | | | A | | Recently, a group of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists has become available for weight management. (You may recognize them by popular brand names, including Ozempic and Wegovy.)
These drugs contain hormones that help control appetite and how the body uses food. They can support weight loss by helping you feel full sooner, slowing down how quickly food leaves your stomach, and helping your body use sugar more effectively. Studies show that GLP-1 medications can help adults with overweight or obesity lose weight, even if they do not have diabetes.
Most of the available evidence for GLP-1s comes from broader obesity trials. Although these studies include a substantial proportion of women in perimenopause and postmenopause, they do not report outcomes by menopausal status.
For people going through menopause, research is still ongoing. Early studies suggest that these medications are effective for weight loss in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, but more research is needed to understand the best way to use them in this group.
Certain GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP medications are approved for adults with obesity or overweight who have specific health risks. They are given as a shot once a day or once a week, depending on the medication. These medications are not a quick fix and work best when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. If you stop taking them, some weight may come back.
If you're trying to lose weight during menopause and lifestyle changes have not been enough, talk with your doctor. Together, you can decide if one of these medications might be a good option for you. | | | | | | | | Do you have any questions for our menopause experts?
